Event Recap | Native Plant Workshop with Chia Café Collective

We had an amazing time on Saturday, April 29th at the Native Plant Workshop hosted by Chia Café Collective, in partnership with the Pala Cupa Cultural Center and Solidarity Farm.

We first want to acknowledge, honor, and offer our gratitude to the Kumeyaay, Luiseño/Payómkawichum, Cahuilla and Cupeño/Kuupangaxwichem people and land. As visitors of this territory, we are committed to building meaningful relationships with the original stewards of this land, and deepening our understanding of the history of colonization. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn with and alongside Indigenous peoples and Elders. We look forward to future gatherings where we can elevate ancestral wisdom and Indigenous ways of life as essential solutions to healing people and our planet.

Thank you to Abe Sanchez, with Chia Café Collective, for leading the group in preparing and cooking native local foods, and sharing your knowledge and passion with us. We learned about the importance of honoring native plants, and the critical role they play in sustaining the earth and mitigating climate change. We also discussed the importance of ensuring that indigenous peoples remain the lead stewards of native plants, and the role many of us can play as visitors of this land.

And thank you to all who joined us. We loved meeting new folks and hanging with old friends, cooking together and trying new foods. Finally, much gratitude to the Solidarity Farm team, for setting an amazing vibe for our gathering, cooking alongside us, and sharing your bounty of strawberries and tomato plants.

The Alliance is looking forward to hosting more spaces for connection this year. If you missed this event, don’t worry—we’re already planning the next one! Keep an eye out for announcements from us and become a member today.
