Hot Grill Summer Social

What a day we had at our “Hot Grill Summer” social hour! The sun was shining, the breeze was just right, and Wild Willow Farm & Education Center was the perfect spot for an afternoon of good vibes, great food, and even better company.

As soon as you stepped onto the farm, you were greeted by the irresistible aroma of Coop’s West Texas BBQ & Catering, known across San Diego for their mouthwatering smoked brisket and ribs. And don’t sleep on their sides– the mac & cheese, collard greens and peach cobbler had everyone coming back for seconds. Mr. Coop and his lovely daughter brought an infectious energy to the event, their warmth and passion for great food added to the day.

Bocadillo of Chula Vista, a local favorite, didn’t disappoint either, with their flavorful and inventive takes on classic dishes. Their offerings added a unique twist to the event, showcasing their knack for combining fresh ingredients into dishes that are both satisfying and full of surprises. Carla made sure our vegans and vegetarians had plenty choices – the cauliflower ceviche was not to be missed.

And let’s not forget Rodriguez Paletas—those refreshing popsicles were exactly what we needed to beat the summer heat! Each bite was a trip back to our childhoods, packed with bright, fruity goodness that left us all smiling.

Of course, the music set the tone for the day, and the B-Side Players, a beloved local band, brought their signature mix of Latin, funk, and rock to the farm. Their infectious rhythms had everyone swaying to the beat. The band’s chill vibe added another layer of joy to the event, making it a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry that makes San Diego so special.

But the fun didn’t stop there. We also had the chance to explore Wild Willow Farm, guided by the wonderful Areli Perez, the farm’s Education Manager. Areli led us on a tour through the farm’s beautiful, green fields, sharing insights into their sustainable farming practices. It was a peaceful, grounding experience—strolling through the rows of crops, feeling the sun on our faces, and learning about the incredible work being done right here in our community.

Wild Willow Farm is truly a gem in Chula Vista, offering a little slice of paradise that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s more than just a farm; it’s a space dedicated to educating the community about sustainable agriculture and fostering a deep connection to the land.

All in all, the day was full of warmth, both from the sunshine and the smiles all around. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend a summer afternoon, surrounded by good food, great music, and amazing people. A huge thank you to Areli and the team at Wild Willow Farm for opening up this beautiful space to us and for leading us back to nature, even if just for a little while.
