2020 Primary Elections are next week!

The 2020 Primaries are this coming Tuesday, March 3rd! Mark your calendar, find your polling place, and be prepared to vote.

In the food movement, people often talk about the importance of “voting” with your dollars. While it's true that smart consumer choices can help build a healthier food system, policies and politics matter too. And often much more.

Decision-makers at all levels of government have a significant impact on the food system. Laws, regulations and public financial decisions related to food not only influence the quality of life for residents, but the social, economic and environmental health of communities.

This Tuesday’s election is important in so many ways, including having very real impacts on the future of food—and the people who grow, distribute, prepare, serve, and eat it. Your vote matters. Find your polling place now.

2020 Local Candidate Questionnaires

Local government policies and programs are often at the forefront of food systems change. From innovative financial tools for food retail development, to direct investments in regional food distribution infrastructure, to culinary careers workforce development programs and many more, initiatives developed locally have transformed communities and can even serve as models for state and federal policy improvements.

Each election year, the San Diego Food System Alliance publishes Candidate Questionnaires for County Board of Supervisor and City of San Diego Mayoral elections, asking all candidates how they will support our local food system.

Not all candidates respond to our questions in spite of persistent outreach. Read the answers we were able to secure below.

  • 2020 San Diego County Board of Supervisors Candidate Questionnaire

  • 2020 City of San Diego Mayoral Candidate Questionnaire

If you’re eligible, make the time to vote this Tuesday. As our core value of Community states, “A just food system depends on the active participation of all people. We leverage the political power of local communities, public involvement, and activism to transform systems.“ Voting is a great first step.
